Be Smart - Get a Head Start - Gearing Up for The New School Year
As the carefree days of summer come to a close, along with later bedtime, and carefree, unstructured playtime, the transition back to a school schedule can be quite abrupt and stressful if you haven’t planned. New routines and schedules lead to meals on the run and lost homework. Along with setting up a specified homework/study area (well-lit and quiet) the transition doesn’t need to be traumatic.
With a little planning and forethought, you and your child will enter the new school year with confidence and anticipation.
2 weeks before school starts
Get back into the groove of a bedtime schedule. If your child is used to going to bed late, gradually adjust their nighttime schedule over the next few weeks to allow time to get up earlier. This includes getting ready for bed and having clothing, backpack, and any supplies ready and laid out for the morning. Establishing a regular bedtime routine can jump-start their success in the coming new school year. This alone will reduce stress and jumpstart their day on the right foot.
Back to school means back into the virus and bacteria incubator.
Let’s face it. Kids are notorious for catching anything that is making the rounds. Sharing cups, uncovered coughs and sneezes (not your child!), school-related stress, and poor diet, can all contribute to a lowered immune system. With covid still in the news, and bird flu starting to emerge in the headlines, prevention is key.
- A regular, consistent bedtime schedule can help keep your child’s immune system in top shape. Shut off all electronic devices early in the evening. The blue light emitted from these devices disrupts melatonin production, which is one of nature’s most powerful antioxidants.
- Personal hygiene- wash-wash-wash those hands! Send an alcohol-based hand sanitizer to school with your child if allowed and isn’t available in the classroom.
- Keep sugar intake to a minimum. Sugar lowers the immune system, making your child more susceptible to any bug going around (common cold and influenza, for example).
- Stress lowers immunity- If your child is struggling at school for any reason, get to the bottom of it. Whether from peer pressure, academic challenges, or personal struggles, let your child know you are there supporting them. Keep the lines of communication open. Just knowing you are in their court is a powerful and effective stress reducer.

A balanced diet and kids rarely mix
